Lecture by William Whyte, Professor of Social and Architectural History at the University of Oxford

All churches are time machines: places that take their worshippers back to the origins of their faith and forwards to the end of time. They are places of memory and archaeological sites. But Berwick is an especially intriguing case study. Built in the aftermath of Civil War, it bears witness to the impact of successive generations, each of whom has reshaped it in their own image. This talk will explore those developments and help explain the remarkable building we now encounter.
